About Sylvia's Restaurant

Sylvia's Restaurant is a soul food restaurant located at 328 Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem, New York, known as the "Queen of Soul Food." The restaurant serves classic Southern and soul food dishes, including fried chicken, collard greens, cornbread, mac and cheese, candied yams, smothered chicken, black eyed peas, and sweet potato pie, and offers daily specials alongside its regular menu. Beyond sit-down dining, Sylvia's provides catering for events of all sizes, including birthday parties, rehearsal dinners, corporate events, weddings, and holiday parties, and it accommodates large parties and group gatherings in its main dining room. The restaurant takes online reservations, offers a to-go/takeout window, and sells food for online ordering as well as gift cards, a loyalty program, and branded products including a cookbook. Sylvia's is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM and Sunday through Tuesday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The restaurant has received recognition including a 2024 James Beard Foundation America's Classics Award, and its walls are decorated with photographs reflecting decades of visits from celebrities and public figures. Sylvia's also hosts community events, including an annual free community breakfast held in partnership with the Sylvia & Herbert Woods Scholarship Foundation, which brings together the Woods family, restaurant staff, and local residents for breakfast, entertainment, voter registration, and scholarship presentations.

Sylvia's Restaurant traces its history to 1962, when Sylvia Woods opened a small restaurant on Lenox Avenue in Harlem. What began with just a handful of tables grew into what the restaurant calls the heartbeat of Harlem, a gathering place for families, friends, community leaders, and public figures drawn in by dishes like fried chicken and collard greens. For more than 60 years, Sylvia's has framed its mission as serving more than food: serving love, legacy, and Harlem hospitality. The restaurant continues to operate under the Woods family's stewardship and partners with the Sylvia & Herbert Woods Scholarship Foundation to host an annual free community breakfast, marking the restaurant's anniversary each year with entertainment, family activities, voter registration drives, and scholarship presentations for the local community. Sylvia's describes every meal as part of an ongoing story that it invites guests and event clients to become part of, whether through a family meal, a private party, or catered event.
