A Durham practice covering three areas under one roof: traffic law, criminal defence and family law. Traffic work runs to moving violations, revoked licence and restoration, DWI defence and DMV hearings. Criminal defence covers assault and battery, drug crimes, domestic violence, felonies and misdemeanors, sex crimes, theft, weapon charges and white collar matters. Family law takes in divorce, child custody and visitation, alimony and spousal support, child support, paternity and prenuptial agreements. Consultations are free and confidential for every criminal and traffic case — the firm’s stated position is that anyone in trouble with the law deserves skilled guidance from the start, with no financial commitment to have the first conversation. Flat-fee pricing is available on some matters, and clients deal directly with the attorney rather than being routed through staff. More than 32 years of experience, much of it in the courtroom. Kathy W. Richardson opened her own practice in Durham in April 1996, after four years as an Assistant Public Defender — two in Gastonia and two in Durham. She had come to law by way of the Army: a commission as a Second Lieutenant while at East Carolina University, then law school at Wake Forest interrupted for a year of active duty in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and finally nine years of service ending at the rank of Captain in 1996, the same year she went out on her own. The firm was originally the Law Office of Kathy Williams and took the Richardson name after her marriage in 1999. Three decades on it remains a small practice built on the same premise: that a client should get the attorney themselves, and that anyone facing a criminal or traffic charge should be able to have the first conversation for free. As she puts it, clients come to the firm knowing they are dealing with "one of their own" — a North Carolinian running a business here and invested in the community.
