About Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation
Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit developer serving East Oakland. It acquires and builds cultural hubs, commercial corridor space and affordable housing, including the Liberation Park Market Hall, Liberation Park Residences and senior housing at 77th and Bancroft. BCZ also runs the AKOMA Outdoor Market, Community Stewards, business navigation, Keep Oakland Housed eviction prevention and a corridor Safety Ambassadors program for current and legacy Black residents.
Eastside Arts Alliance convened East Oakland nonprofits, cultural workers and grassroots groups in 2014 to counter disinvestment and displacement. That coalition became the East Oakland Black Cultural Zone Collaborative and designated a 50-block area from High Street to the San Leandro border as the Zone. The Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation was incorporated in November 2019 as the Collaborative's implementing arm for real estate and development.
