About The Hardware Store

A full-line hardware store in Sparta carrying tools, paint and general hardware, plus a rental fleet that includes Bobcat equipment and attachments, trailers, scaffolding, a scissor lift, a stump grinder, inflatables and small tools. In-store services cover paint color matching, key cutting, propane refills and Airgas/MWS tank exchange, hydraulic hose repair, pipe threading, window and screen repair, blade sharpening, U-Haul rentals and UPS shipping. The stated approach is hands-on help with problem solving, including working from a customer's part or photo rather than just directing them to an aisle.

Craig Sagehorn, then living in Brooklyn Park, MN, bought the struggling Kelly's Our Own Hardware in Sparta in 1976 and moved his family there, gradually rebuilding the store around core hardware. When Wal-Mart announced a location south of town in 1986, he bought the adjacent parcel and opened a much larger store in 1987, adding power equipment, rentals and a U-Haul franchise. Supplier affiliations shifted over the years from Our Own Hardware to True Value to Ace, and after Craig's son Paul took over in 2009 the business moved to Orgill and adopted the name The Hardware Store. Paul's son Wyatt purchased the business in 2016 at age 20; Craig died in 2022, and Wyatt runs the store with his brother Hank.
