About Speed Queen Bar-B-Q

Barbecued meats cooked over what the restaurant describes as the largest BBQ pit in Milwaukee, served with trademarked secret sauces made from a family recipe. Sauces are sold alongside the menu, and the operation handles catering and gift cards. Orders can be placed online for pickup.

Betty Gillespie and Leonard Partee started the business in the summer of 1956 from the back of a storefront in the old hay market at 5th and Vliet, next door to established Milwaukee barbecue spot "Black King." Word spread about the barbecue, secret sauce, and quick service, and Gillespie earned the nickname Speed Queen. The business moved to 12th and Vine and then, in 1975, to the corner of 12th and Walnut, where it remains.
