About Saubel's Markets - Stewartstown

A full-service supermarket with bakery, deli, meat, seafood, produce, floral and gift, and beer, wine and liquor departments, plus a pharmacy and a weekly ad with digital coupons. Much of the prepared food is made in-house across the chain: soups and salads are made daily at the Shrewsbury store and trucked to the other locations, and doughnuts are mixed, proofed, fried and topped on premises. Two smokehouses supply smoked sausage, beef jerky, homemade bologna, smoked turkey legs and salmon. Natural and organic groceries were added in 2006. The Stewartstown store occupies roughly 28,300 square feet.

The business traces back to a country general store in Hametown, PA, where Claude Saubel left a tool and dye job at the Washington, D.C. naval yard to help his father-in-law and took over operations with his wife in 1926, selling everything from dynamite and plow shares to groceries. His son Leon and Leon's wife Doris opened Saubel's Super Thrift in Shrewsbury in March 1966 with 5,200 square feet and seven employees, expanding five times to 45,000 square feet. Leon and Doris retired in 1991, passing the business to sons Steve and Greg, who acquired the Graceton Markets stores in Stewartstown, PA and Whiteford, MD in 2001 and rebranded them. Greg and Betti Saubel bought out Steve's share in 2006, later opening a replacement Whiteford store in 2009 and a York store in 2016; the company now employs over 350 people, with a fourth generation involved.
