About NAACP Merced County Branch

NAACP Merced County Branch advances civil rights and civic engagement across Merced County. The branch runs youth leadership development, voter registration and advocacy training, and scholarships for high school seniors and Merced College students. Committees handle housing, education, criminal justice, legal redress complaints, health, and religious affairs. Members meet monthly at the Merced County Office of Education, and the branch hosts the annual Freedom Fund Banquet, film screenings and Black History Month events.

The NAACP was founded February 12, 1909, partly in response to lynching and the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Illinois. Some 60 people signed the founding call, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Mary Church Terrell. The national office opened in New York City in 1910 under president Moorfield Storey, with Du Bois founding its journal, The Crisis.
