About MKE Black

A Milwaukee nonprofit that maintains a directory of the city's Black-owned businesses, along with a marketplace of member offers, community events, and news coverage. Business owners can submit listings, log in to manage their profiles, and connect through programs such as the Solidarity Circle. Its work is organized around the Nguzo Saba, seven principles of African communal values including cooperative economics and collective responsibility, and donations fund the directory, events, and community programs.

Founded in 2019 by Paul Wellington and Rick Banks with a mission to amplify the Milwaukee Black community through intentional investment of resources and global connections. Rick Banks, a Milwaukee native and organizer since 2010, chairs the board, and Asha Sawyers serves as executive director. The board and advisory board include local entrepreneurs, educators, and civic leaders from organizations such as Soul Brew Kombucha, Jet Constellations, and Marquette University Law School.
