Restaurant, Soul-food Restaurant, Southern Restaurant in Durham, NC
Southern comfort food from two Durham kitchens, at 2514 Fayetteville Street and 5400 S Miami Boulevard. The house signature is the Honey Honey Chicken Wings; the rest of the board runs to fried fish, chicken and dumplings, hamburger steak and gravy, fried pork chop, meatloaf, turkey wings, baked spaghetti, oxtails, catfish, curry chicken, salmon and chicken salad, all built as one- or two-side combos. Sides are the classics — collard greens, yam soufflé, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, rice and gravy, fried okra and coleslaw — with sweet potato pie to finish. The restaurant caters events, sells gift cards, and steers customers to its own website and app for orders so more of the money stays with the kitchen instead of a delivery platform. Family-friendly, easy parking, fast service.
Let’s Eat Soul Food began with Glynis Hall cooking at home — 150 to 200 plates a day — for a catering business she had not set out to build. It grew into a Durham restaurant and then a second location, and the family runs both: her daughter is regional manager and her oldest son manages the other store, where he also sells Fabian Flavors Pudding. Hall hires NCCU students and puts giving back at the centre of how she describes the business. Her siblings run Where’s the Jerk and Vittles At The Park, and she uses her own platform to push customers toward them too.
