Amanda Skillern grew up in the Houston area, graduated valedictorian of her high school class, and earned a business administration degree from the University of Houston's Bauer College of Business with minors in Spanish and Psychology. She attended South Texas College of Law and passed the Texas bar exam in 2006, then began her career as a prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney's Office. She handled cases from Class C assault to murder across justice of the peace, felony district, and civil district courts before opening her own defense firm.
