About Heartwood Historic

A full-service wood shop focused on historic preservation and restoration alongside custom carpentry and furniture. Work includes entry and interior doors, traditional windows, historical millwork, bespoke joinery, and moldings, informed by a working knowledge of classical architecture. The shop itself is outfitted with restored antique woodworking machines — including a Wysong & Miles mortiser from around 1945, a 24-inch Rockwell/Delta planer, and a 1918 American No. 1 jointer — that are used in production; every exterior door is mortised on the vintage mortiser.

Founder Benjamin Covin II started Heartwood after living in Japan, where he was inspired by Japanese harmony and aesthetics. He studied jazz saxophone in college but grew up around carpentry and architecture, which he describes as making the move into owning and operating a wood shop a natural transition. The shop is also home to Layla, a pitbull from Luling, Texas, billed as lead shop dog.
