About Florida Avenue Grill

Florida Avenue Grill serves soul food in Northwest D.C. The restaurant sits at the corner of Florida Avenue and 11th Street, and has been called the oldest soul food restaurant in the world. It was built on the idea of a home-cooked meal at an affordable price, in a room where customers of different races and social standings sit side by side. Little about the original charm has been changed under later owners.

Lacey C. Wilson Sr. saved tips from shoeshine work on Capitol Hill and opened the Grill with his wife Bertha in 1944. The first room held two bar stools; the couple cooked in the basement and bought chickens two at a time. The Grill survived firebombing during the 1968 riots. Lacey Jr. bought a majority interest in 1970. Imar Hutchins purchased it in 2005.
