About Favor Desserts

Homemade cakes from scratch, made to taste like your grandmother’s. More than thirty flavours are in rotation, with the house reputation resting on Red Velvet cupcakes, the Five Flavor pound cake, carrot cake and Italian Creme. The counter runs 10-inch two- and three-layer cakes, three-layer ice cream cakes, pound cakes, cupcakes by the dozen and petite by the dozen, and sheet cakes; wedding and specialty cakes are quoted. Custom work covers weddings, birthdays, family reunions, church banquets and cupcake parties — big or small. Open Monday to Friday 10:30am–6pm and Saturday 10:30am–4pm, closed Sunday, at 4520 South Alston Avenue.

Keijuane Hester learned to bake in a prison kitchen, serving four years for selling cocaine after graduating from Durham’s Hillside High in 1994. He left with a carrot cake recipe. When steady work would not come, he went back to selling on the street — this time Five Flavor pound cake, red velvet and carrot — and in July 2004 opened Favor Desserts out of his own home, taking cakes round barbershops and hair salons. The operation outgrew three houses before he opened a storefront bakery and coffee shop in February 2012. Favor Desserts now serves over a thousand customers a week across more than thirty flavours, and Hester puts the proceeds back into the community: he speaks to schoolchildren and to inmates, and hires people coming out of prison. His stated mission is to show that someone with a negative past can turn around, build a productive life and make an honest living.
