Founder Lauren built the space to feel "reminiscent of a tattoo studio," creating an environment where independent nail artists can express their creativity and effectively run their own businesses within a shared space. Blackheart Nails was established in 2020 by a nail artist known as Lauren Blackheart, whose vision for the studio grew directly out of a practical turning point: her previous studio lease had expired, and rather than simply finding another space to rent on her own, she saw an opportunity to build something different. Lauren partnered with two nail technician friends to launch a collaborative artist collective, one designed to feel less like a conventional salon and more like an independent creative studio, deliberately modeled after the atmosphere of a tattoo shop rather than a typical spa. That founding decision, to build a space where independent nail artists could each run their own client base under one roof, shaped everything that followed. Since opening in Eagle Rock, the collective has grown well beyond its original three founders, with the team more than tripling in size as more independent artists joined the studio. As the business expanded, Lauren's role evolved from solely working with clients to also training incoming nail technicians, helping preserve the studio's specific style and standards, including its use of premium Japanese and Korean gel products, as new artists came on board. What began as a response to a lease running out has grown into an established Northeast LA studio known for its rock-and-roll aesthetic and collective business model, still guided by Lauren's original belief that nail artists deserve creative independence rather than the constraints of a standardized salon environment.
