About Afro-American Historical Association of Fauquier County
The Afro-American Historical Association of Fauquier County documents African American life in Fauquier County, Virginia. The Warrenton headquarters holds museum exhibits, archives and family keepsakes, and welcomes the public, schools and community groups. Searchable databases cover 1867 voters, African American marriages, Bible records, those born free and emancipated, emigrants to Liberia, and the Know Their Names project on enslaved residents. A story map charts historic communities, schools and churches. The building is wheelchair accessible.
Karen Hughes White and Karen King Lavore began researching their family lines in the late 1980s. Joining the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society would have required starting a local chapter and paying national dues, a barrier for many Black residents of Fauquier County. With that society's support, the two founded their own organization instead. The board dates from its organizing in 1992. AAHA moved to Warrenton in 2025.
